FULL CAREER-TRAINING: TAPING COURSE DESCRIPTION:

There are two main drywall trades: Drywall Hanging (or "Boarding", the tradesmen commonly known as "Boarders") and Drywall Finishing (or "Taping", the tradesmen commonly known as "Tapers") TSD specializes in training Tapers and this course is by far the most popular.

This training program is 95% hands-on. There is also a written exam at the end of the 10 weeks to ensure that students have a theoretical comprehension of the trade. Classes consist of no more than 10 students. Using a proprietary training system, students are trained to finish drywall board to different levels using different approaches. This training model was developed by TSD to ensure that each student obtains a solid foundation on which to build his or her career. The program covers dry-taping and wet-taping techniques as well as an introduction to automatic taping systems.

The course also includes workshops on tools, materials, techniques, work ethics and for job-searching, estimating, and running a small business. Students are also certified in Fall Protection.

The first week of the training is held at TSD's facility at 2810 Matheson Blvd. East , Suite 200 in Mississauga. After that the class meets at various training ground locations which can be anywhere in the GTA and sometimes a little outside the GTA. A class will typically go to three or four locations during the entire course. Each student is responsible for his or her own transportation. For the last two weeks of the course, students are assigned a project to complete and are graded on this project.

The intensive nature of the training means that students would not want to miss any days of class in order to benefit fully and be successful.

Equipped with valuable marketable skills, graduates are well positioned  to obtain entry level jobs in this high-demand industry. Some will choose to start their own small drywall finishing business.

Because taping does not involve lifting the heavy drywall boards, some women have been very successful in this field. However, it is still physically demanding work and should only be considered as a career option by men and women who enjoy working hard with their hands.

People who succeed in this trade are often detail-oriented and enjoy working with their hands. A good work ethic coupled with patience, self-motivation, determination and diligence is a good recipe for success.

Jobs, Salaries & Placement:

The need for drywallers in the GTA is a serious one. The situation will only get worse: the average age of drywallers is around 50 and many will be retiring in the next five to ten years. Those who get into the trade now will enjoy a promising future of plentiful work and high salaries.

The average salary  of drywallers is 65K a year. Graduates from the program will typically start between $10.00 and $15.00 an hour. Depending on a number of factors, newcomers to the trade will see their salaries increase rapidly, sometimes doubling in the first year.

Many, equipped with their new skills, start their own small business!

Each graduate is responsible for his or her own job search. However, TSD assists graduates as much as possible and is proud of the fact that the vast majority of them obtain employment quickly.

Certification:

Drywall is not a trade for which certification is mandatory. A license is not required. TSD certifies its graduates and this certificate of formal training is gaining important recognition in the industry.

Warning:

Drywall Finishing is physically demanding work. Stamina and the ability to work hard is necessary. Persons suffering from asthma are discouraged from pursuing a career in drywall finishing. If you are suffering from back problems or other injuries, please consult a physician for advice before pursuing this career path.
